Bill setting parameters for dating apps approved by House committee

An Advance in legislation is bringing the Online Dating Safety Act, which mandates dating platforms to inform their users about interaction with fraudulent profiles, close to a House of Representatives vote.

This Bill’s markup was done by the House Energy and Commerce Committee on Thursday. Introduced again by Rep. David Valadao (R-CA) in September, the measure seeks to oblige dating applications like Tinder, Bumble, and eHarmony to notify its user if they have communicated with someone who has previously been expelled from these platforms for terms of service violations.

Valadao expressed concerns over how easy it is for online predators to victimize innocent people while emphasizing that this bill is critical for informed decisions concerning their interactions online.

The Act was inspired by conmen such as Simon Leviev, infamously known as “The Tinder Swindler”, who tricked women into lending him cash via Tinder.

No precise schedule has been set yet concerning when or if this bill will be presented at a floor vote during this term.

The Committee reviewed the Online Dating Safety Act in conjunction with several technology-focused bills. Among these legislative proposals were The Consumer Safety Technology Act, which calls upon the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission to explore integrating AI into their activities, and The REPAIR Act – mandating car manufacturers give access to repair tools & data necessary for most common vehicle repairs without visiting manufacturer-controlled auto shops.

Editor’s Note: A previous version of this report indicated that ID verification was a requirement under the Online Dating Safety Act, however, this clause has been eliminated from the bill version forwarded on Thursday. We apologize for any misunderstanding caused by our error.
